The Bundestag has passed the Digital Identity Act, clearing the way for Germany's d-you wallet to launch on 2 January 2027 with ID functions only and more advanced privacy features to follow. The EU's top court has told banks to refund phishing victims first and settle liability afterwards, and a Strasbourg startup raises 10.69 million euros to manage the AI tools of small firms.
The EU is aiming for wide adoption of its digital identity wallet by December 2026, and the Commission is still studying who pays to issue it, run it and verify it. Nvidia is backing British and French startups, while the UK's state investor puts 180 million pounds into AI and deeptech funds to capture more of the value at home.
Germany's digital ministry denies leaving its AI project with SAP and Mistral AI, a project whose basis is a non-binding letter of intent. The UK and Spain, by contrast, have backed named companies with public money. An ASML executive says the chipmaker sold nothing to European customers last quarter, and Baden-Württemberg's finance minister wants to cut the state's data protection staff by 40 per cent.
