Europe builds Microsoft-alternative ‘Euro-Office’ to reclaim digital sovereignty

Europe is accelerating its drive for digital sovereignty with the launch of Euro-Office, a collaborative project by a coalition of European enterprises and community organizations. This initiative aims to provide a robust, Microsoft-compatible suite for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, directly addressing the continent's reliance on non-European productivity platforms. A tech preview is now available, signaling a significant step towards an independent European digital infrastructure. The Euro-Office solution integrates components from over a dozen distinct organizations, including IONOS, Nextcloud, and Eurostack, with a stable release anticipated by summer. This collective effort bypasses the common trade-offs seen in existing alternatives, which often compromise on compatibility, user experience, or are hindered by licensing ambiguities. By offering a familiar interface and ensuring genuine digital sovereignty, Euro-Office targets public administrations, businesses, and educational institutions reassessing their technological dependencies. The development of Euro-Office is particularly timely given increasing geopolitical uncertainties and recent disruptions in the market, such as ONLYOFFICE's withdrawal from cloud offerings. This project seeks to provide organizations with a secure and reliable office suite, managed and controlled within Europe. With its open-source licensing and transparent development process, Euro-Office emphasizes strategic resilience and fosters trust in digital infrastructure for European users.
