Government concludes deal with European cloud platform STACKIT

The Dutch central government has finalized a framework agreement with STACKIT, a European cloud platform, to provide sovereign cloud services for public sector organizations. This strategic move aims to bolster the Netherlands' digital autonomy and reduce reliance on non-European technology providers, a key objective in the broader European push for digital sovereignty. The agreement facilitates the use of secure and favorable cloud solutions for government bodies under pre-defined terms. Under the terms of the agreement, Dutch government agencies can voluntarily access STACKIT's services with explicit stipulations regarding data storage within the European Economic Area (EEA). The government retains audit rights to ensure compliance with data protection and usage regulations, reinforcing transparency and security. Furthermore, the contract includes provisions for contract termination, particularly if the provider is acquired by an entity outside the EEA, safeguarding sensitive government data. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards reducing dependence on foreign technology companies and enhancing digital resilience. By fostering the European cloud market, the Dutch government empowers public organizations to make independent choices from a diverse range of providers. The agreement, negotiated by Strategic Supplier Management (SLM) Rijk, simplifies procurement processes for individual agencies, ensuring access to advantageous terms for all, regardless of size.
