EU’s plan to simplify digital laws to benefit mainly large companies at the expense of consumers

The European Commission's proposal to simplify digital laws has raised concerns regarding consumer protection and privacy. Critics argue that the proposal, intended to streamline regulations, may primarily benefit large, non-European technology companies. This shift potentially weakens existing privacy rules and delays the implementation of AI regulations. Specifically, the proposal could allow companies to utilize personal data for AI system development without explicit consumer consent. This change favors entities with extensive data resources, potentially disadvantaging European startups and harming consumer interests. BEUC regrets that the plans do not rely on an evidence-based approach and comprehensive consultations. This legislative move could have significant repercussions for digital rights and the competitive landscape. Consumer advocates worry about the erosion of privacy standards and the potential for unfair practices. The current structure may inadvertently hinder the growth of European companies by prioritizing the interests of Big Tech. Agustín Reyna, Director General of BEUC, emphasized that the focus should be on making compliance easier for European businesses and consumers. He highlighted that EU consumer and data protection rights are key to fostering a competitive Europe aligned with its core values.
