Aufrüstung im All: Bundeswehr plant eigenes „Starlink“ mit Laserwaffen und Störsystemen

Germany is accelerating its commitment to space-based defense with plans for a new military satellite network, dubbed "SATCOMBw Stufe 4." This initiative, a collaboration between defense giant Rheinmetall and satellite manufacturer OHB, aims to create a secure communication system for the German Armed Forces, establishing a European counterpart to commercial satellite constellations. This project signifies a substantial investment in bolstering Germany's capabilities and strategic autonomy in the increasingly critical domain of space. The ambitious network is slated to comprise 100 to 200 satellites in low Earth orbit, providing robust and encrypted communication links for the Bundeswehr's global operations. Beyond mere communication, the system is reportedly being developed with offensive capabilities, including advanced laser technology, jamming systems, and inspection satellites. This multifaceted approach underscores Germany's intent to not only enhance its surveillance and command-and-control but also to deter and respond to potential threats in space. This development is a crucial component of Germany's broader strategy to militarize space, supported by a dedicated budget of approximately €35 billion for space technology. The "SATCOMBw Stufe 4" project alone is estimated to be worth €8-10 billion, with operational readiness targeted by the end of the decade. The initiative is particularly relevant for securing NATO's eastern flank, where Germany is establishing a significant troop presence in Lithuania, highlighting the geopolitical importance of resilient space-based infrastructure.
