Verifactu is driving half of Spain crazy, but there's good news: freelancers with simple invoices are exempt

Spain's tax agency, Agencia Tributaria, is rolling out a new electronic invoicing system called Verifactu, sparking confusion among businesses and freelancers. The initiative aims to combat fraud and is set to become mandatory for Spanish companies from January 1, 2026. However, the lack of clarity around the new regulations has caused considerable concern. While the deadline for freelancers is set for July 1, the tax agency has clarified that those using simple invoices created manually or with basic software like Word or Excel are exempt. Businesses face potential fines of up to €50,000 for non-compliance. The lack of clear communication from the tax agency has generated alarm and confusion among the self-employed, with even accounting firms struggling to understand the new system. The president of the autonomous business association has criticized the lack of a proper communication campaign. There have been calls for a postponement of the mandatory implementation of Verifactu, although the current deadlines remain in place.
